Inspired by Tree of Life, 8th C St. Vigean’s Stone Cross Slab (thought to have been copied from an illuminated manuscript now lost.) -Arbroath, Angus, Scotland.

Blue border in a 15th C Italian (?) manuscript

Inspired by Feudal Customs of Aragon, Northeastern Spain ca 1290-1310. (Images in the Margins by Martot McIlwain Nishimura, p.3)

Inspired by an early 16th century prayer book possibly done by German artist, Jacob Elsner.  Tthe dragon forms a zoomorphic initial 'S' beginning a prayer to the Virgin "Sancta maria perpetua virgo.”
